A free downloadable module courtesy of Listen
Up! and Ellen A. Rhoades Ed.S., Cert. AVT
This module was prepared in response to the many requests we
have received asking for something for the beginning listener. It is a free
module that can be downloaded from our web site and passed on to anyone that can
use it. It includes an excellent article written by Ellen Rhoades telling us a
bit about the purpose behind each of the sounds. We've even included a chart to
keep track of progress and 18 Learning To Listen cards.

mother writes and gives us this great idea:
"A while back I copied the baby freebees off of the "Listen up
and talk up" page of your web site. Now that my 16 month old son has his
CI and is in AV therapy, I have been looking for ways to incorporate those
beginning sounds into our lives. I discovered that I could print magnets of
all of those beginning words/sound pictures (moo/cow, quack/duck, etc.) and
stick them all over the house (washer, dryer, refrigerator, computer desk,
etc.) can even take them in the car the baby can stick them on the bottom of a
small cookie sheet while I drive and it keeps him from pulling off his CI
while in the car. My son loves them he pulls them off and moves them and puts
them on 100 times a day, good way for me to keep talking with him while I'm
getting other things done. Be sure to make them big enough (4" at least)
so the little ones don't eat 'em. Also, I cut out the pictures off of his
Christmas present packaging so some of the magnets match some of the toys we
use for sound play."
Another
mother tells us:
"I just got a magnet maker and another thing you can do
is to play "go fish" with them....just buy a cheap dowel, attach and string
and a magnet...although the magnet isn't always strong enough it works well
enough for the little guys. Also I use clip art and pictures in addition to
the learning to listen pictures."
